Season 3 of Re:Zero throws our boy into his most brutal gauntlet yet—the Battle for Priestella, where he faces not one, not two, but FIVE Sin Archbishops simultaneously while managing city-wide chaos, resurrected swordsmen, and a forced wedding ceremony. If you thought the Sanctuary arc was rough, buckle up because this season cranks the pain dial to eleven. MAJOR SPOILER WARNING: This recap covers every single episode of Re:Zero Season 3 with complete plot details. If you haven’t watched yet, turn back now!
Episode 1: Theatrical Malice
One year after the Sanctuary Incident, Emilia’s camp arrives in the Watergate City of Priestella alongside Anastasia, Felt, and Crusch’s camps, lured by the promise of a magic stone that could revive Puck. The deal falls through when Subaru befriends local bard Liliana Masquerade, whom the merchant is hopelessly infatuated with. The episode serves as a calm-before-the-storm reunion, bringing together Julius, Reinhard, Felix, Wilhelm, and even Priscilla’s camp (including Reinhard’s deadbeat father, Heinkel). We learn about Wilhelm’s strained relationship with Reinhard, whom he unjustly blames for his wife’s death. Garfiel gets haunted by visions of Elsa while discovering his mother is somehow still alive. The peace shatters when Subaru encounters the Sin Archbishop of Wrath, Sirius Romanée-Conti, who delivers a twisted sermon before dropping a child to his death—which somehow kills everyone watching due to her damage-sharing Authority. Subaru’s first “Return by Death” of the season activates immediately.
Episode 2: A Showdown of Fire and Ice
With only minutes to spare, Subaru races to save the child Lusbel, only to discover Sirius has also captured his friend Tina. The Archbishop easily overpowers and kills him, triggering another reset. On his second attempt, Subaru enlists Reinhard’s help, and the Sword Saint obliterates Sirius instantly—but this causes everyone connected to her Authority to die the exact same way, including Subaru. Third time’s the charm: Subaru briefs Beatrice privately, and when Emilia insists on helping, the three confront Sirius together. Emilia faces off against the enraged Archbishop (who has a violent reaction to seeing her) while Subaru and Beatrice rescue Lusbel. Sirius seemingly incinerates Emilia using Tina as leverage, but plot twist—the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneus, appears out of nowhere to “save” her, declaring his intention to make her his 79th wife. Because nothing says romance like being wife number 79.
Episode 3: Gorgeous Tiger
The episode splits focus masterfully. At the city gates, Otto encounters the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, establishing that multiple Archbishops are in play. Meanwhile, Subaru attempts to rescue Emilia from Regulus using Invisible Providence, but fails—worse, it causes Sirius to believe Subaru is actually Petelgeuse reincarnated. The Archbishops retreat according to their Gospel’s instructions, but not before Regulus grievously injures Subaru, which copies to everyone in range thanks to Sirius’ Authority. Garfiel’s subplot develops beautifully as he learns his mother survived the landslide but now has amnesia and a new family. Subaru awakens in an underground bunker where Felix and Al have been tending to him, with Beatrice completely drained from healing everyone. The Witch Cult’s plan is revealed: they’ve seized control of the city’s four towers and threaten to flood Priestella unless they receive the remains of a witch buried beneath the city, with the Sin Archbishop of Lust, Capella Emerada Lugunica, leading negotiations.
Episode 4: Operation: Take Back the Government Office
The situation deteriorates rapidly. Heinkel holds Felt hostage specifically to keep Reinhard occupied and out of the fight. At Muse Company headquarters, Subaru’s group discusses Capella’s mysterious connection to an Emerada Lugunica from fifty years ago and learns the witch’s remains are known only to the Council of Ten. Garfiel bursts in carrying a bloodied Mimi after encountering two Witch Cultists—a woman and a man wielding four arms. Wilhelm recognizes the description immediately. After Kiritaka reveals removing the witch’s remains would destroy the entire city, they formulate a counterattack plan to retake city hall, with reinforcements from Julius and Ricardo while Al searches for Priscilla. The operation launches with our heroes battling cultists as Capella (in dragon form) taunts them before leaving. Subaru, Crusch, and Julius pursue her but encounter Roy Alphard, the second Sin Archbishop of Gluttony. The episode ends on a disturbing note: Emilia wakes up naked in an unfamiliar bed, greeted by Regulus asking if she’s a virgin.
Episode 5: A Dark Torrent
This episode showcases the Archbishops’ terrifying powers in full. Regulus is delighted by Emilia’s innocence and introduces her to “Number 184,” one of his many wives. Julius stays behind to duel Roy while Subaru and Crusch penetrate city hall, subduing a dragon and rescuing a hostage—who reveals herself to be Capella in disguise. The Archbishop demonstrates her shapeshifting Authority by transforming into Emilia to mock Subaru’s feelings, then brutally rips off his injured leg and infects both him and Crusch with dragon’s blood. Meanwhile, Kiritaka loses contact with the Council of Ten as Sirius attacks Muse Company, forcing Anastasia to flee with her followers and the White Dragon’s Scales. Otto creates a distraction allowing Reinhard to finally rescue Felt from Heinkel. Then disaster strikes: the watergates suddenly open, flooding the entire city. Capella’s transformed dragon attempts to escape with Crusch and Subaru, but Subaru plummets into the water during the chaos. As Emilia watches the devastation unfold, Capella broadcasts three new demands: the Tome of Wisdom, the artificial spirit (Beatrice), and non-interference with the upcoming wedding.
Episode 6: Conditions of the Knight
Wife 184 informs Emilia that escape attempts will result in the floodgates reopening. Subaru awakens having been rescued by Priscilla and Liliana, discovering his leg has completely healed with regenerative properties thanks to Capella’s dragon blood. Priscilla updates him on the new demands while effortlessly dispatching a group of demi-beasts unleashed on the city. At a refugee shelter, they find civilians in chaos due to Wrath’s Authority, but Liliana’s singing reveals her power to override Sirius’ influence. With Regulus, Emilia witnesses his horrific abuse when he nearly kills 184 for a minor perceived slight, shocked by the wife’s complete emotional detachment. Subaru reunites with his group at the recaptured city hall, learning they lost Muse Company but that Crusch is suffering terribly from the dragon’s blood infection. After updating everyone about Beatrice being the artificial spirit and the Tome of Wisdom’s destruction, they discuss minimizing casualties in the refugee shelters. In a powerful moment, Subaru declares his absolute resolve to save everyone, defeat all enemies, and achieve their happy ending. Meanwhile, Emilia eavesdrops on Regulus arguing with Capella via metia, learning they weren’t responsible for opening the floodgates—and unexpectedly, Al calls the device.
Episode 7: The Newest of Heroes and the Most Ancient of Heroes
Al discovers a metia from a cultist and inadvertently contacts Emilia, who relays Regulus and Capella’s locations. He delivers the intel to Subaru’s group at city hall, now reunited with Garfiel, as Subaru hatches a plan to combat Wrath’s Authority city-wide by broadcasting a hopeful message through the master metia. Everyone nominates Subaru for the speech, with Al voicing concerns about him shouldering too much responsibility—which paradoxically convinces Subaru to accept. Emilia learns from 184 that Regulus murdered everyone who ever knew her or any of his other wives to maintain absolute possession of them. Subaru delivers a phenomenal speech that addresses his own insecurities while expressing unwavering determination to protect everyone and defeat the threats, successfully reaching civilians throughout the city and alleviating the Wrath-induced anxiety. Emilia voices her faith in Subaru and desire to help 184, while everyone at city hall approves of his leadership. Just as they prepare to resume strategic planning, Otto and Reinhard arrive with crucial updates.
Episode 8: The One I’ll Love Someday
Otto drops a bombshell: he recovered the burned remains of the Tome of Wisdom and brought it into the city for restoration, secretly telling Subaru he wants to use it as insurance against any future schemes by Roswaal. Subaru visits the suffering Crusch and discovers that touching her transfers part of her infection to his right arm while partially healing her, though she stops him from continuing. Wilhelm then reveals the devastating truth about the two mysterious Witch Cultists: they’re the resurrected bodies of “Eight-Arms” Kurgan (the strongest swordsman of the Volakia Empire) and his wife, the previous Sword Saint Theresia van Astrea. He explains that Theresia lost her Divine Protection to Reinhard during the White Whale battle, leading directly to her death. The group finalizes their battle assignments: Priscilla and Liliana confront Sirius (using Liliana’s song to counter Wrath), Wilhelm and Garfiel take on Capella and the corpse warriors, Reinhard and Subaru target Regulus to rescue Emilia, and Julius with Ricardo track down Gluttony. At the church, Regulus begins the wedding ceremony as Emilia confronts him about his twisted understanding of love, enraging him. Before he can retaliate, Subaru and Reinhard dramatically crash through the doors to Emilia’s absolute delight.
Episode 9: City Scramble
The Battle for Priestella explodes across multiple fronts simultaneously. Priscilla prepares to face Sirius while entrusting city hall’s defense to Al, also cryptically mentioning someone besides the Witch Cult has been hunting the Council of Ten. Garfiel and Wilhelm locate Capella alongside Kurgan and Theresia’s resurrected bodies, engaging in their respective duels. At the church, Regulus weaponizes his wives by threatening to kill them, forcing Reinhard to surrender and endure a fatal attack—which kills him briefly before his Divine Protection resurrects him, allowing him to counterattack. Otto encounters Felt and the city knights battling Lye Batenkaitos, realizing there are multiple Gluttony Archbishops; he creates a distraction after learning Lye seeks Subaru. Elsewhere, Julius and Ricardo engage Roy in combat. As Reinhard continues fighting the seemingly invincible Regulus, Subaru and Emilia attempt evacuating wife 184 and the others, but they refuse out of fear. The couple joins the battle to deduce how Regulus’ invulnerability works, testing multiple attack methods with zero success. The Archbishop remains completely untouchable, frustrating their every attempt.
Episode 10: The Plan to Conquer Greed
Capella provokes Felix into attacking, reveals she can’t cure dragon’s blood, then discovers “Crusch” is actually a disguised Anastasia, who blasts her down a trap into underground tunnels where Al waits in ambush. Meanwhile, Subaru, Emilia, and Reinhard exhaust every conceivable method to harm Regulus without success. Emilia mentions the wives called him “Little King,” triggering Subaru’s realization that all Sin Archbishops are named after stars from Earth—Regulus literally means “little king” in Latin. Elsewhere, Sirius quickly puts Liliana under her spell, forcing Priscilla to kiss the bard to break it. Sirius herds brainwashed civilians toward them, so Priscilla battles the Archbishop while Liliana works to free the civilians. Sirius impresses herself with Priscilla’s resistance but manipulates her by mentioning specific story titles, landing a direct hit. Back at the church, when Emilia mentions feeling nothing from Regulus’ touch, Subaru has Reinhard confirm the Archbishop’s heart isn’t beating—then gets launched into the atmosphere for his trouble. With this crucial information, Subaru formulates a plan, sending Emilia away while confidently revealing Regulus’ Authority name to the Archbishop’s absolute fury: “Lion Heart,” the ability to freeze his body in time.
Episode 11: Liliana Masquerade
Priscilla survives Sirius’ devastating attack completely unscathed, revealing her ability to transfer any damage onto her valuable possessions instead. Sirius reaffirms her delusional desire for “mutual understanding” with everyone, but when Liliana eloquently calls out the absurdity of forcing connections through pain, the Archbishop’s facade shatters into rage. While Priscilla continues the fight, Liliana climbs to the tower’s peak to sing toward the brainwashed civilians. The episode features a beautiful flashback to Liliana’s life growing up in a travelling troupe, feeling inadequate and leaving to become “king of the bards.” She travelled between towns with mixed success, even discovering her parents replaced her with a new child, nearly abandoning her dream until inspiration struck for a song that received warm reception, eventually leading to her meeting with Kiritaka in Priestella. Liliana’s performance successfully frees all the brainwashed civilians from Sirius’ Authority. In desperation, Sirius attempts using Tina as a hostage again, but Priscilla effortlessly rescues the girl and slashes the Archbishop into the canal. As the tower collapses, Liliana falls into the lake but is saved by Kiritaka before losing consciousness.
Episode 12: Regulus Corneas
Emilia reaches the church and convinces Regulus’ terrified wives to help defeat him, getting them to openly admit how much they despise their captor. Wife 184 reveals her real name is Sylphy and explains Regulus’ Authority: he connects his heart to theirs, allowing him to stop time on himself without the fatal consequences. Concluding that defeating him requires killing the wives, they prepare for suicide—until Emilia instead puts them all into cryosleep with her magic. She returns to Subaru’s side, but Regulus’ Authority remains active because he already considers Emilia one of his wives. Recalling his traumatic experiences with Petelgeuse and Satella, Subaru uses Invisible Providence to physically destroy the connection between Emilia and Regulus’ hearts, finally rendering the Archbishop vulnerable. Panicking, Regulus desperately challenges them to a one-on-one duel, only to face a returned Reinhard who gladly accepts. The Sword Saint launches the Archbishop skyward before striking him back down with devastating force, critically wounding him. As Regulus dies, he recognizes Emilia as the girl from 100 years ago and curses her with his final breath, despite her having no memory of him. Afterward, Emilia unfreezes the wives, and Subaru expresses complete confidence that their allies will win their own battles.
Episode 13: The Warrior’s Commendation
Otto battles Lye and learns Felt’s group was searching for a powerful metia, agreeing to keep the Archbishop busy with the city knights while Felt retrieves it. Elsewhere, Capella reveals to Al that she’s deduced he opened the floodgates and murdered the Council of Ten, disrupting her actual plans. She attempts provoking him by transforming into Priscilla, but Al decapitates her and destroys the body—only for it to regenerate completely. Meanwhile, Garfiel’s fight with Kurgan goes poorly as the warrior overwhelms him while Elsa visions continue haunting him. Knocked into the catacombs, Garfiel recalls Wilhelm’s stories about Kurgan’s life in the Vollachian Empire and his practice of only unleashing all his Devil Cleavers against respected opponents—which Garfiel determines to become. Their battle crashes into a shelter containing his half-siblings, where Garfiel overcomes the Elsa illusions by defeating a loose demon. The civilians’ cheering gives him renewed confidence, finally earning Kurgan’s respect, who deploys all his Cleavers. After their brutal mutual beatdown, Kurgan briefly regains his true self to tell Garfiel “Well done” before crumbling away. Simultaneously, Wilhelm remains deadlocked in his emotional battle against his beloved Theresia.
Episode 14: Theresia van Astrea
Wilhelm attempts reasoning with the resurrected Theresia but is caught off-guard and defeated when Heinkel stumbles onto the battlefield. Reinhard arrives just before Theresia can deliver the killing blow, instantly defeating his grandmother. The episode provides a heartbreaking flashback to Theresia’s life: hating violence, she initially rejected her calling after receiving the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, but reluctantly accepted when relatives died fighting in her place—until Wilhelm met her and took over her battle duties. They started a family and lived peacefully for years until the White Whale appeared and Heinkel convinced Theresia to join the subjugation despite Wilhelm’s protests. The assault failed catastrophically when her Divine Protection transferred to Reinhard mid-battle, and Pandora immediately killed her. Theresia awakens in the present within Wilhelm’s arms, and the couple confesses their love one final time as she passes on again. Heinkel tries berating Reinhard for killing his grandmother, but the Sword Saint responds with complete indifference. This prompts a detached Wilhelm to dismiss Reinhard after collecting Theresia’s remains, leaving behind a manic, broken Heinkel.
Episode 15: A Hideous Dinner Party
Otto and the city knights struggle to corner the slippery Lye, while Roy easily dominates Julius and Ricardo through superior swordplay, martial arts, and magic. Roy disturbs Julius by constantly calling him “Brother” and referencing events Julius can’t recall. Meanwhile, Al activates the trap for Capella, collapsing the entire city hall directly onto her. Outside, he reunites with Anastasia and Felix, growing suspicious when Anastasia mentions using magic earlier. Capella reconstitutes herself but announces her intention to leave per the Gospel’s instructions, siccing demi-beasts on them before fleeing—until Reinhard arrives to eliminate the threats. With Lye, Otto deduces his superhuman abilities come from obtaining the skills of whoever he consumes with Gluttony. Lye demonstrates by instantly erasing a city knight, removing his memory from everyone. When Lye prepares to torture Otto for his name, an awakened Beatrice arrives as backup. Shockingly, Lye reveals he already knows Beatrice’s name and mimics Rem, making them realize they must defeat him immediately to prevent Subaru from encountering him.
Episode 16: The Result of the Battle for Priestella
Beatrice holds off Lye using magic stones provided by Al until Felt arrives with their secret weapon: Echidna’s staff. Lye attempts consuming Felt’s name but convulses, revealing “Felt” isn’t her birth name. Seizing the opening, Beatrice activates the staff and unleashes a devastating magic beam that critically wounds Lye. Before they can finish him, a third Sin Archbishop of Gluttony—Louise Arneb—appears and forces them to let her and her brothers escape, ending the Battle for Priestella. Subaru reunites with Beatrice, Garfiel, and Otto before meeting with the other camps. They decide Emilia will place Lust’s victims in cryosleep until a cure is found, while captured Sirius will be transported to the capital for interrogation. Subaru questions Sirius personally; she claims disinterest in the Cult’s goals, only wanting to revive Petelgeuse, whom she believes now inhabits Subaru’s body. She also warns him about Gluttony. As the city rebuilds, Subaru reunites with Julius—but is stunned when Emilia doesn’t recognize him, realizing in horror that Roy ate his name.
Key Highlights & Themes
- Multiple Sin Archbishops: Season 3 simultaneously features five Archbishops (Wrath, Greed, Lust, and three Gluttony siblings), creating the series’ most complex villain ensemble
- Damage-Sharing Authorities: Sirius’ Wrath allows shared pain/death among connected people; Regulus’ Greed uses his wives’ hearts to achieve invincibility
- Return by Death Maturity: Subaru uses his resets more strategically, developing plans across loops rather than brute-forcing solutions
- Wilhelm’s Tragedy: The emotional core involves Wilhelm confronting his resurrected wife Theresia while processing his misplaced resentment toward Reinhard
- Garfiel’s Growth: Confronting both Elsa trauma and his mother’s amnesia while earning the respect of the Vollachian Empire’s strongest warrior
- Al’s Betrayal: Revealed as responsible for opening floodgates and killing the Council of Ten, suggesting hidden motives and allegiances
- Names as Power: Gluttony’s ability to erase names (and memories of people) introduces devastating permanent consequences
- Liliana’s Purpose: The bard’s singing serves as the counter to Wrath’s Authority, making seemingly minor characters crucial
- Priscilla’s Mystery: Her ability to transfer damage and her connection to Liliana hint at deeper story significance
- Collective Heroism: Unlike previous arcs, victory requires perfectly coordinated efforts across multiple simultaneous battles
Ending Explained
The Battle for Priestella ends in a pyrrhic victory. While our heroes successfully defeat or drive off most of the Sin Archbishops, the cost is staggering. Capella escapes unharmed, the three Gluttony siblings retreat alive (with Lye critically wounded but rescued), and only Sirius is captured. The true horror reveals itself in the final moments: Roy Alphard consumed Julius’ name, erasing him from everyone’s memories except Subaru (protected by Return by Death). This creates a devastating new problem—how do you save someone no one remembers exists? The ending emphasizes that while Subaru is growing stronger and more strategic, his enemies are inflicting wounds that can’t be reset. Victims of Capella’s dragon blood remain infected, requiring Emilia to freeze them indefinitely. The revelation about Al orchestrating the floodgate opening and Council of Ten murders adds a sinister layer, suggesting the Witch Cult wasn’t even the primary threat. The season closes on Subaru’s horrified realization as he watches Emilia fail to recognize Julius, understanding that Gluttony’s power creates a form of suffering even his Return by Death cannot undo—the living erasure of people from existence itself. It’s a masterful cliffhanger that shifts the stakes from “can Subaru save everyone?” to “can Subaru save people who have been conceptually erased from reality?”
Predictions & Theories
Julius Recovery Arc: Season 4 will likely focus on Subaru helping Julius reclaim his identity and restoring everyone’s memories, possibly requiring confrontation with all three Gluttony siblings.
Al’s True Allegiance: His betrayal suggests he either serves someone beyond the Witch Cult or has his own Return by Death-like ability (explaining his tactical precision). His protection of Priscilla hints at complex motivations.
Capella’s Royal Connection: Her claim to the Lugunica name and transformation abilities suggest she may be related to the royal family’s destruction, potentially connecting to the larger selection ceremony plot.
Regulus and Emilia’s Past: His dying words about recognizing Emilia from 100 years ago ties into the Frozen Bond backstory and Pandora’s involvement, suggesting Emilia’s sealed memories contain crucial information.
Gluttony’s Three Authorities: Each sibling (Lye-skills, Roy-memories, Louise-names?) seems to possess different aspects of Gluttony, requiring unique strategies to defeat.
The Tome of Wisdom’s Role: Otto’s recovery of the burned tome will likely provide strategic advantages but also reveal Roswaal’s hidden agendas.
Pandora’s Shadow: Her appearance in Theresia’s death flashback confirms she’s been orchestrating events for decades, making her the series’ true final antagonist.
Beatrice and Echidna: The staff’s power against Gluttony suggests Echidna’s creations may be specifically designed to counter Witch Cult authorities.

Closing Thoughts
Re:Zero Season 3 delivers the series’ most ambitious arc yet, juggling 16 episodes of interconnected battles while developing multiple character threads simultaneously. The Priestella arc shifts from Subaru’s personal growth (Seasons 1-2) to examining how he functions as part of a larger heroic collective. Every character gets meaningful development—from Liliana’s bardic journey to Wilhelm’s tragic closure with Theresia to Garfiel overcoming his trauma.
What makes this season exceptional is its willingness to show that victory comes with permanent costs. Unlike previous arcs where Return by Death could eventually fix everything, Julius’ erasure proves some damage transcends even Subaru’s authority. The cliffhanger isn’t just emotionally devastating—it fundamentally changes the rules of the series.
Whether you’re here after binge-watching or need a refresher before Season 4, the Battle for Priestella represents Re:Zero firing on all cylinders: complex villain powers, strategic Return by Death usage, ensemble cast coordination, and gut-wrenching consequences. The stage is set for an even darker journey ahead as Subaru must find a way to restore those who have been erased from existence itself.
