Re:Zero Season 2 Full Recap: Subaru’s Most Brutal Journey Through Sanctuary and Suffering

Welcome back, Return by Death survivors! If you thought Season 1 put Subaru through hell, Season 2 takes that suffering and cranks it up to eleven. This season dives deep into the psychological torment of looping, introduces us to the twisted brilliance of the Witches of Sin, and forces our boy Subaru to confront his past, present, and every horrifying future that could be. ⚠️ MASSIVE SPOILER WARNING: This recap covers all 25 episodes of Re:Zero Season 2 in full detail. Read at your own risk!

Episode 1: Each One’s Promise

Subaru’s victory against the Witch Cult is immediately shattered when he returns to Crusch’s manor and discovers that everyone has forgotten Rem—she’s been attacked by the Sin Archbishops of Gluttony (Lye Batenkaitos) and Greed (Regulus Corneus), resulting in her existence being “eaten” and leaving her comatose while Crusch loses all her memories. Devastated, Subaru attempts suicide hoping to rewind time before the ambush, only to discover his save point has moved forward—he’s trapped in a timeline where Rem is already lost. During a tense alliance meeting with the amnesiac Crusch, Felix, and Wilhelm, they agree to continue working together despite the tragedy. As Subaru grieves, Emilia offers him comfort, but the weight of being the only person who remembers Rem crushes him, setting the stage for the psychological nightmare to come.

Episode 2: The Next Location

Subaru, Emilia, and Otto return to Roswaal’s manor with the comatose Rem, where they meet Frederica Baumann (an ex-maid who’s returned) and young Petra Leyte (a new apprentice from Arlam village). When Subaru seeks answers from Beatrice about Petelgeuse’s gospel, she cryptically tells him to visit the Sanctuary—a place where Roswaal currently resides with Ram and the evacuated villagers. Frederica explains that the Sanctuary is sealed by a barrier and gives Emilia a mysterious crystal to help them enter. As they approach, the crystal activates and Emilia collapses unconscious, prompting Subaru to grab it—which transports him into a forest where he spots a fleeing elf girl. Chasing her to ancient ruins, Subaru is transported again to an open plain where he encounters a woman who introduces herself as Echidna, the Witch of Greed, forever changing the trajectory of his journey.

Episode 3: The Long-Awaited Reunion

Inside Echidna’s mental space—a realm housing her soul—Subaru sits down for tea with the Witch of Greed, engaging in a tense information exchange before remembering his mission and departing. Upon waking at the ruins, he’s immediately attacked by Garfiel Tinzel, the Sanctuary’s aggressive Guardian, until Subaru mentions Frederica’s name. Garfiel escorts the group to meet Roswaal and Ram, where devastating news awaits: the Sanctuary’s barrier traps half-breeds inside, including Emilia, and can only be broken by someone passing ancient trials within the ruins. Roswaal attempted the trials himself but was rejected for not being a half-breed, leaving Emilia as the only viable candidate. The Sanctuary inhabitants have taken the Arlam villagers hostage to force Emilia’s participation, which she reluctantly agrees to. That evening, when Emilia enters the trial, Subaru follows—only to be granted permission by Echidna to participate as well, causing him to collapse and inexplicably awaken back in Japan, his memories of Lugunica completely erased.

Episode 4: Parent and Child

Stripped of his memories of Lugunica, Subaru reverts to his hikikomori lifestyle, avoiding school while his parents—Kenichi and Naoko—desperately try to help him. Strange headaches plague him whenever he runs from his problems, hinting that something is wrong with this reality. During a pivotal walk with his father, Subaru’s suppressed memories flood back, and he finally confesses the truth: he spent his entire childhood trying to live up to Kenichi’s image, failing constantly, and losing his own identity in the process. He admits he wanted his father to abandon him but couldn’t bring himself to make that happen. However, Subaru also reveals that he’s found people in another world who accept him for who he is, and father and son finally reconcile. The next day, as Subaru prepares for school, his mother wishes him well—a heartbreaking moment as he realizes this world is an illusion and he’ll likely never see his parents again. At school, Echidna awaits him, confirming he’s passed the first trial: conquering his past.

Episode 5: A Step Forward

Echidna congratulates Subaru on clearing the first trial and reveals two more remain, but he wakes to find Emilia suffering a mental breakdown after failing her own trial repeatedly. Back at their Sanctuary residence, Subaru, Otto, and Garfiel brainstorm ways around the barrier, only to be told by Ryuzu (the elf girl and Sanctuary elder) that completing the trials is the only solution. Days pass as Emilia attempts and fails the trial repeatedly while Puck remains mysteriously absent since their arrival. Subaru confronts Roswaal, growing furious when the margrave reveals his inaction during the Witch Cult attack was deliberate—he wanted Subaru to be the hero and take credit. After several frustrating days, Subaru convinces the Sanctuary residents to release the Arlam villagers while Emilia stays to continue the trials. During the journey back, Garfiel suggests Subaru could complete the trials in Emilia’s place to spare her suffering. Upon reaching Roswaal’s mansion, however, Subaru finds it eerily deserted—before Elsa Granhiert’s blade suddenly pierces his gut, killing him and resetting everything.

Episode 6: The Maiden’s Gospel

Respawning at the Sanctuary graveyard, Subaru comforts the crying Emilia and proposes taking the trials himself—but this time, the response is catastrophically different. Garfiel reacts with disgust and Emilia with disappointment, believing Subaru doesn’t trust her abilities. Confiding his plan to check on the mansion to Roswaal, Subaru is joined by Ram for the journey. On the road, Ram experiences strange memories of past loops, prompting Subaru to tell her about Rem’s existence. At the mansion, Subaru tries interrogating Frederica about the teleportation crystal, but she’s bound by an oath to stay silent. Elsa suddenly appears holding Petra hostage, forcing a desperate escape. Frederica transforms into a beast to fight Elsa while the others attempt to rescue Rem, only to be ambushed by a mabeast. One by one, everyone except Subaru is killed—and when Elsa corners him, he desperately jumps into Rem’s room hoping to protect her, only to end up in Beatrice’s library instead, where his sheer terror signals something far worse is coming.

Episode 7: Friend

Enraged that Beatrice only saved him while letting everyone else die, Subaru attempts suicide to restart the loop, but she stops him. Noticing she possesses what appears to be a Witch Cult gospel, Subaru interrogates her until she snaps, revealing that everything she’s done for him was under orders from “the book.” Before they can continue, Elsa finds them and kills Subaru, resetting the loop once more. After respawning, Subaru again plans to take the trial in Emilia’s place and privately discusses this with Garfiel and Ryuzu—but the repeated respawns have increased the Witch’s miasma around him, causing them to suspect he’s a Witch Cultist. They imprison him in captivity, where Subaru spends three agonizing days pondering every failure and mistake that led to this moment. Fortunately, Otto finds him and reveals he’s orchestrated an escape plan with Ram. When Subaru questions why Otto would risk so much to help him, Otto’s simple answer cuts through all the complexity: “Because we’re friends.”

Episode 8: The Value of Life

Despite Otto and Ram insisting they flee immediately, Subaru demands to confront Roswaal first about Beatrice, learning that she possesses one of two Tomes of Wisdom—books that reveal the future to their readers—and that he need only tell her he is “that person,” though what this means remains unclear. Garfiel discovers them, forcing Subaru to flee on his land dragon Patraache while Ram holds off the enraged Guardian. Otto and the Arlam villagers create diversions to help Subaru escape across the barrier, but Garfiel brutally kills them all and catches up. Just as Subaru crosses the barrier, Frederica’s crystal activates and teleports him away, leaving him unconscious. When he wakes, he finds himself back at the Sanctuary—but it’s completely abandoned and frozen over, the eerie silence broken only by the approach of countless rabbit mabeasts that swarm and devour him alive in one of the series’ most horrifying death sequences. After respawning traumatized beyond words, Echidna appears and drops a bombshell: she knows about Return by Death, and within her mental space, Subaru can speak freely about it without triggering the Witch’s curse.

Episode 9: Love Love Love Love Love Love You

Finally able to vocalize his suffering, Subaru breaks down completely as Echidna comforts him, and she reveals the rabbits are the Great Rabbit—one of the Three Great Mabeasts created by the Witch of Gluttony, Daphne (another being the White Whale). Echidna offers to introduce Subaru to the other Witches of Sin, but before he meets Daphne, the Witch of Pride (Typhon) confronts him and uses her power to “punish the guilty,” shattering his body to judge if he’s a “sinner.” The Witch of Wrath, Minerva, heals him just in time, allowing him to finally meet Daphne, who reveals the Great Rabbit is attracted to strong magic sources. Having learned what he needed, Subaru takes his leave—but upon waking, he finds catastrophe: as punishment for repeatedly discussing Return by Death, Satella herself has emerged and killed nearly everyone at the Sanctuary. Her miasma begins devouring Subaru when Garfiel arrives to save him. Elsewhere, as Roswaal is consumed by the miasma, he cryptically comments that Subaru will need to try harder “next time,” revealing he knows far more than he’s let on.

Episode 10: I Know Hell

Garfiel launches a desperate counter-attack against Satella using an army of Ryuzu clones, but they’re utterly powerless against her, and Garfiel is killed. Satella’s miasma drives Subaru toward madness, leaving him no choice but suicide to escape. After respawning, Subaru immediately checks on Emilia, relieved she’s still herself and hasn’t been corrupted. Later, while exploring the Sanctuary, he discovers an abandoned laboratory containing the original Ryuzu Meyer suspended in animation. The village elder Ryuzu (a clone) finds him and explains that Echidna created her and the other clones as part of an immortality experiment, and that meeting Echidna has made Subaru an “Apostle of Greed,” granting him command over the Ryuzu replicas. Armed with this knowledge and newfound authority, Subaru has a heartfelt conversation with Emilia, convincing her to depend on him rather than shouldering everything alone. The next morning, he attempts to leave early for the mansion, but Garfiel blocks his path—until Subaru, having learned from Echidna that Return by Death grants infinite lives, shows no fear and forces Garfiel to back down, racing to the mansion to confront Beatrice before disaster strikes.

Episode 11: The Taste of Death

Subaru forcibly takes the Tome of Wisdom from Beatrice, only to discover its pages are completely blank—she reveals she’s bound by a contract to wait for “that person” who will grant her death. Their argument is cut short by Elsa’s arrival, forcing Subaru to grab Beatrice and flee. They’re intercepted by Meili Portroute, the mabeast tamer who’s already slaughtered Frederica and Petra. Beatrice fights valiantly and seemingly kills Elsa, but the assassin impossibly revives and stabs Beatrice through the back. Before dying, Beatrice uses Frederica’s crystal to teleport Subaru back to the Sanctuary. Upon arrival, Subaru finds snow falling and Emilia completely insane from failing the trial repeatedly, her mind shattered. Confronting Garfiel about stopping the snow leads them to Roswaal, where Subaru deduces the margrave is causing it deliberately. Roswaal proceeds to kill both Garfiel and Ram before revealing he owns the second Tome of Wisdom and has known about Subaru’s time loops all along. The Great Rabbit attacks in the chaos, and Roswaal allows them to devour him while Subaru survives just long enough to crawl to Emilia and die in her arms—a heartbreaking end to perhaps his worst loop yet.

Episode 12: The Witches’ Tea Party

At his absolute breaking point after respawning, Subaru seeks counsel from Echidna but is instead forced through the second trial—a nightmarish sequence showing him countless scenarios of how others react to his many deaths, completely shattering his psyche. When all seems lost, Rem inexplicably appears to calm him down—except it’s not actually Rem, but the Witch of Lust, Carmilla, sent by Echidna to stabilize him. Echidna offers Subaru a contract that would allow him to consult with her at any time, and desperate for help, he nearly accepts. However, the other Witches interrupt and warn him against trusting Echidna, forcing her to reveal the truth: she desires his Return by Death power and was the one who trapped Beatrice in the library to wait for “that person”—who doesn’t exist and never did. Realizing Echidna is a manipulative psychopath who views him as an experiment rather than a person, Subaru rejects her—and at that moment, Satella invades the mental space, bringing the tea party to a violent end.

Episode 13: The Sounds That Make You Want to Cry

Satella confronts Subaru with unexpected words: he should love himself more. Hearing this from the source of all his suffering causes Subaru to snap completely, ranting about how little his life matters before attempting suicide to escape the situation. Minerva revives him, and Carmilla forces him to recall how people grieved for him in the second trial, making him realize that his deaths do matter to others. Regaining his fear of death and will to live, Subaru thanks the Witches and parts ways as Satella cryptically tells him that when the time comes, he must “kill her.” Upon waking, Subaru is comforted by Patraache and Otto, but discovers he can no longer take the trials—they’ve rejected him. Confronting Roswaal with their mutual knowledge of each other’s secrets, Subaru listens in horror as Roswaal voices disappointment that Subaru hasn’t fully exploited his looping ability and reveals he hired Elsa specifically to create an impossible situation: Subaru can save either the mansion or the Sanctuary, but not both. Recognizing Roswaal as a madman, Subaru flees in despair until Otto catches up, realizes something’s wrong, and tells him to stop carrying every burden alone.

Episode 14: Straight Bet

Otto convinces Subaru to trust him with the truth, and after learning everything, they devise a comprehensive plan together. The next day, Subaru confronts Roswaal with a bold wager: if Subaru saves both the Sanctuary and the mansion in this loop, Roswaal must surrender his Tome of Wisdom; if Subaru fails, he’ll follow the tome’s instructions forever. Roswaal accepts. After discussing Garfiel’s psychology with Ryuzu, Subaru checks on Emilia, who opens up about her past: Puck found her frozen in ice, they lived in isolation until Roswaal discovered them, and the margrave promised to save her fellow elves (turned to ice sculptures) if she won the Royal Selection. However, she can’t remember anything before being frozen. Subaru manages to summon Puck, who reveals that their contract has been suppressing Emilia’s memories—and deeming her ready to stand on her own, he breaks their contract and vanishes. Overcome with grief at losing Puck, Emilia runs away into the Sanctuary. While the Arlam villagers search for her, Garfiel discovers Subaru is plotting something and confronts Otto. Meanwhile, Emilia hides at the ruins, where Subaru finally finds her for a crucial heart-to-heart conversation.

Episode 15: Otto Suwen

Otto leads Garfiel on a chase through the Sanctuary, using his unique ability to communicate with animals to set up elaborate traps throughout the forest. As he runs, Otto reflects on his difficult past: his ability made him an outcast everywhere he went, constantly forced to move until he met Subaru and his companions, who saved him from the Witch Cult and gave him the first real friendship he’d ever known. Garfiel eventually catches Otto despite the traps, but Ram arrives just in time to defend him, engaging in fierce combat with the Guardian. Meanwhile, at the ruins, Emilia demands Subaru scold her for running away like a child. Recognizing that Emilia suffers from severe self-loathing and a negative bias toward herself, Subaru instead confesses his love for her. When she protests that he’s just projecting an ideal image onto her again, Subaru clarifies that he loves her despite—and including—all her flaws, her failures, and her weaknesses. They share a kiss, which Emilia doesn’t reject, finally giving her the courage to believe in herself. The two exit the ruins together, only to find Garfiel waiting for them—having defeated both Otto and Ram—ready for the final confrontation.

Episode 16: Nobody Can Lift a Quain Stone Alone

Subaru realizes Garfiel’s aggression stems from deep insecurity about why his mother abandoned the Sanctuary—he believes she left him and Frederica behind to find a better life outside. Garfiel reveals the traumatic truth: he secretly followed his mother ten years ago and watched her die in a landslide, cementing his belief that leaving the Sanctuary leads only to death. Using “Invisible Providence” from the Sloth Witch Factor he inherited from Petelgeuse, Subaru manages to overpower Garfiel in combat. At this critical moment, Ram convinces Garfiel to face his past by taking the trial himself. Inside the trial, Garfiel discovers the truth: his mother didn’t abandon them—she left to find his father and bring their family back together. Accepting this truth and making peace with his past, Garfiel reconciles with Subaru and joins his cause. As Emilia prepares to retake her own trial, Subaru makes her a promise: after everything is over, they’ll go on a proper date together. Emilia enters the ruins as Echidna welcomes her with ominous words: “Witch’s Daughter,” hinting at secrets yet to be revealed.

Episode 17: A Journey Through Memories

Accompanied by Echidna, Emilia is immersed in dreamlike memories of her childhood, beginning with the Princess Room—her home in the forest—and her aunt, Mother Fortuna, who raised her while her parents were absent. Young Emilia follows a lesser spirit to spy on Fortuna meeting with Petelgeuse and other witch cultists delivering donations, where Petelgeuse asks about “the seal” and mentions Emilia’s parents would be concerned about its safety. Emilia continues sneaking out to eavesdrop on their conversations about the seal, until her curiosity drives her to ask the lesser spirits to lead her to it—a massive black door in a snowy forest clearing. Through these encounters, Emilia, Fortuna, and Petelgeuse develop a close bond, with Fortuna teaching Emilia spiritual arts and Petelgeuse accidentally revealing her parents have died. Fortuna promises they’ll discuss her parents someday, but as they escort Emilia back to the Princess Room, they’re suddenly confronted by the Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneus—and everything Emilia’s forgotten is about to come crashing back.

Episode 18: The Day Betelgeuse Laughed

Outside the graveyard in the present, Ryuzu Shima shares with Subaru and others that she underwent the trial and possesses some of the original Ryuzu Meyer’s memories: generations ago, Ryuzu befriended Beatrice while Echidna was busy conducting research, and during this time also met a young Roswaal. In Emilia’s trial, Fortuna and Petelgeuse attempt to protect young Emilia from Regulus, now joined by Pandora—the Witch of Vanity—a white-haired girl searching for the “key” and the “seal.” Petelgeuse tells Fortuna to flee with Emilia while he holds them off, opening a cursed box that grants him the ability to use Unseen Hands. Witnessing his resolve, Pandora grants him the title of Sin Archbishop of Sloth. Echidna then convinces the present-day Emilia to face her past directly, transporting her back to witness events unfold. Fortuna asks Archi to escort young Emilia to safety, tearfully promising her daughter she’ll never leave her and that she’ll never be alone—breaking both Emilias’ hearts. Archi is attacked by the Black Serpent while fleeing with Emilia, succumbing to the curse just after ensuring Emilia can continue running. As Fortuna rejoins Petelgeuse, an enraged Regulus seemingly kills Pandora—only for her to reappear unharmed and send Regulus away. Young Emilia, desperate to help Fortuna and Petelgeuse, returns to the seal—only to find Pandora waiting for her with sinister intentions.

Episode 19: The Permafrost of Elior Forest

Pandora reveals to Emilia that as the “Witch’s Daughter,” she holds the key to unlock the seal and attempts to manipulate her into opening it, promising no harm will come to the forest’s residents. Despite the tempting offer, Emilia refuses because of her promise to Mother Fortuna. Fortuna arrives to comfort Emilia while battling Pandora, and Petelgeuse joins the fight—but in his enraged, maddened state, he accidentally attacks and mortally wounds Fortuna instead. The dying woman apologizes to her brother Petelgeuse for not doing enough for his daughter, while Emilia tearfully forgives her. Petelgeuse descends into complete insanity upon realizing he killed his sister, with Pandora praising his actions as stemming from “love.” Emilia’s overwhelming grief causes her magic to spiral out of control as she attempts to kill Pandora, but instead ends up freezing the entire forest—including all her loved ones. Before Emilia herself falls into deep sleep, Pandora erases all memory of her own existence from Emilia’s mind and disappears with the now-laughing, broken Petelgeuse. Having completed the trial, Emilia reconciles with her past self’s actions and accepts the decisions she made, vowing to fight for a world where her frozen friends and family can live happily. Echidna declares she has passed, and Emilia awakens in the temple, mourning her mother. Outside, Subaru, Otto, and Garfiel confront Roswaal, who admits that Otto—a seemingly insignificant variable not in the prophecy—allowed Subaru to rewrite fate entirely, earning his respect. Subaru then demands Roswaal’s surrender, revealing he now knows the Sanctuary’s true purpose.

Episode 20: The Beginning of the Sanctuary and the Beginning of the End

In a flashback to 400 years ago, young Roswaal is saved during his dangerous “magical release period” by Echidna, becoming her devoted pupil and falling deeply in love with her. He develops a close bond with Echidna, Beatrice, and Ryuzu as they work together to protect the Sanctuary. One day, the “Devil of Melancholy,” Hector, attacks, leaving Roswaal worried since the Sanctuary’s barrier remains incomplete. Ryuzu volunteers to become the barrier’s core as thanks to Echidna for saving her, knowing it will cost her life. Roswaal and Echidna battle Hector to buy time while Beatrice escorts Ryuzu to the core chamber, where Ryuzu realizes the full sacrifice required. Beatrice desperately tries to convince her not to go through with it, but Ryuzu accepts her fate, and they share a tearful goodbye. In the present, Subaru asks Roswaal to call off the attack on the mansion, but he refuses, believing minor changes can’t overwrite the tome’s absolute will. Roswaal argues with Subaru about how feelings are weakness and people can’t change, revealing his obsessive love for Echidna has consumed him for four centuries. He accuses Subaru of being identical to himself—pushing ideals onto the women they love—though Subaru vehemently denies this and defends Emilia. Meanwhile, Emilia leaves the graveyard and meets Ram, who has been waiting for her with a plan to save Roswaal from his delusions.

Episode 21: Reunion of Roars

With negotiations failed, Subaru, Otto, and Garfiel plan to rush back to the mansion to stop Elsa, with Garfiel revealing his mixed heritage means he can leave the Sanctuary at will. Ram tells Emilia about Subaru’s plans and asks her to save Roswaal from his 400-year obsession. When Roswaal appears and attempts to claim he and Subaru are the same because they both push ideals onto Emilia, she retaliates powerfully. Recalling her earlier conversation with Subaru, Emilia explains that Subaru loves her including all her flaws—a concept that visibly shocks Roswaal. As Emilia returns to start the second trial, Roswaal leaves, instructing Ram to wait for Emilia’s completion. Instead, Ram confronts him at Ryuzu’s crystal, where he wields the Tome and reveals his plan to use the crystal’s stored mana to create snowfall, summoning the Great Rabbit. He expects Ram wants revenge for enslaving her, as one of the men who burned down her village years ago. However, Ram declares she wants to save him from Echidna’s delusions—and reveals her trump card: Puck. The three prepare for an epic duel. At the mansion, Elsa begins her assault on Petra and Frederica, but an armored Garfiel arrives for a long-awaited reunion with his sister. As he prepares to engage Elsa in combat, Petra is met by Subaru, who briefly checks on her before leaving to find Beatrice for the final confrontation.

Episode 22: Happiness Reflected on the Water’s Surface

While Garfiel and Elsa clash in brutal combat, Subaru confronts Beatrice in her library one last time. She claims that since her death was foretold in the Tome, she’s satisfied with that being her purpose and destiny. Subaru desperately tries to talk sense into her—to abandon her promise to Echidna and forge a new path for herself. When she asks if he is “that person,” he says no—but before he can explain further, she instinctively kicks him out of the library. Subaru regroups with Otto, Petra, and Frederica (who’s carrying the unconscious Rem) and they encounter Meili. Frederica stays behind to fight the mabeast tamer while the others head toward a secret escape passage, only to be stopped by a massive mabeast guiltylowe. Meanwhile, Emilia undergoes the second trial, ending up in an alternate present where she lives happily in her forest with Fortuna and Petelgeuse. After a pleasant picnic where she encourages them to be honest about their feelings for each other, she has a profound conversation with Archi about her resolve to be admirable like those who’ve supported her and to help others. Archi transforms into Echidna, whom Emilia thanks for showing her this world. A tearful Echidna merely responds that she hates her before vanishing. Outside, Emilia is met with support from both villagers and demi-humans, who’ve come around after hearing about Garfiel’s resolve and now cheer her on. She enters the graveyard once more, ready to face the third and final trial: “a disaster yet to come.”

Episode 23: Love Me Down to My Blood and Guts

The battle with the mabeast guiltylowe sets the mansion ablaze, with Subaru leaving to find Beatrice while Otto and Petra escape the burning building. In the graveyard, Emilia undergoes the third trial, subjected to a barrage of visions and voices from potential futures that leave her alone in Echidna’s mental space. Minerva appears (keeping her identity hidden) and remarks that Echidna was too upset to face Emilia. During their conversation, Minerva briefly mentions Emilia’s mother but refuses to elaborate further. Before departing, Emilia invites all the witches—including Echidna—to a tea party together the next time they meet. Upon waking, Emilia enters Echidna’s now-open grave and undoes the magic spell powering the barrier, freeing the Sanctuary. Leaving the graveyard, she finds it covered in a blizzard. Back at the burning mansion, Garfiel reveals his knowledge of Elsa being a vampire and despite her near invulnerability, she can be killed. Elsa reveals her tragic backstory of living alone in the cold until discovering that slicing people up was the only thing that made her feel warm. During their fight, Frederica escapes with Meili, distracting Elsa long enough for Garfiel to gain the advantage—they bite each other’s necks in a feral exchange before Garfiel finally ends the battle by crushing her beneath a rock pig’s corpse. In the now-snowless Sanctuary, Puck and Ram continue battling Roswaal, who reveals he deliberately cast a spell on Emilia’s contract with Puck before entering the Sanctuary to sabotage her during the trials. Ram confesses she loves Roswaal and wishes to save him, completely bewildering the ancient mage. She manages to steal the Tome and joyfully throws it into the fire—just as an enraged Roswaal fires a devastating blast directly at Ram.

Episode 24: Choose Me

In the aftermath of their battle, snow begins falling as Puck realizes Roswaal had activated the weather-changing spell before their fight even began. Puck departs to buy time for the others while Roswaal remains behind, desperately trying to heal the unconscious Ram. Emilia discovers a massive ice sculpture protecting the villagers from the snow and learns Puck used most of his magic to save them before disappearing. Venturing out to help, Emilia encounters the Ryuzu clones, where Shima fuses herself with the original Ryuzu Meyer before vanishing. Emilia and the clones find Roswaal and Ram, getting them to safety so Emilia can stay behind to confront the Great Rabbit horde now descending upon the Sanctuary. At the burning mansion, Beatrice reflects on her 400-year existence: Echidna’s original instruction to guard the library, her encounters with countless generations of the Mathers family, and her eternal wait for “that person”—who she believes might be Subaru. He returns and tries one final time to convince her to take his hand and leave with him. As the library burns around them, she kicks him out again after he refuses to tell her the lie she desperately wishes to hear. He emerges one final time as the last unopened door in the mansion opens. Subaru asks Beatrice to choose him—admitting he won’t live as long as she will, but promising she’ll never be alone because he’ll always be there for her, for all the tomorrows to come. A blast of light suddenly streaks across the sky from the mansion. Beatrice, having finally taken Subaru’s hand, reappears with him in the Sanctuary beside Emilia, and together they prepare to face the Great Rabbit.

Episode 25: Offbeat Steps Under the Moonlight

With their new contract in place, Subaru and Beatrice combine their powers with Emilia’s to execute the perfect trap against the Great Rabbit. Beatrice seals the infinite mabeast horde in another dimension using Al Shamac, finally saving the Sanctuary from destruction. Beatrice and Roswaal visit Echidna’s grave together, where he reveals the shocking truth: he is the original Roswaal, having perfected soul transcription to transfer his consciousness into each generation of his descendants for 400 years. Outside, Subaru and Emilia reconnect, leading to a hilarious misunderstanding where Emilia believes she’s pregnant from their earlier kiss. The group takes turns punching Roswaal as punishment for his manipulations before negotiating what comes next, with Subaru aware they’ll still need his assistance for future threats. Roswaal reveals that due to their bet, an oath curse has appeared on his chest that will kill him if he betrays them. They reluctantly agree to trust him, with Emilia forcing him to properly apologize for everything. Later, everyone attends a ceremony where Subaru is formally knighted in Emilia’s service—a moment of triumph after so much suffering. Roswaal privately reveals to Subaru his ultimate plan to find a way to revive Echidna and, without the Tome of Wisdom, expresses faith in Subaru while threatening to reduce everyone to ashes should Subaru lose anyone important to him. Alone on a balcony after the knighting ceremony, Subaru and Emilia meet and reaffirm their trust and belief in each other, sharing a tender moment before rejoining the festivities and looking toward an uncertain but hopeful future.

Key Highlights & Themes

  • Return by Death’s True Cost: Season 2 explores the psychological horror of looping, with Subaru experiencing his most brutal deaths yet—being eaten alive by the Great Rabbit and watching everyone he loves die repeatedly.

  • The Witches of Sin: We meet all seven Witches—Echidna (Greed), Satella (Envy), Minerva (Wrath), Carmilla (Lust), Typhon (Pride), Daphne (Gluttony), and Sekhmet (Sloth)—each with distinct personalities and philosophies.

  • Subaru’s Growth: From confronting his past in Japan to rejecting Echidna’s contract, Subaru learns to value himself and accept help from others, particularly Otto’s friendship.

  • Emilia’s Trauma: The trials force Emilia to confront her repressed memories of the Elior Forest tragedy, Mother Fortuna’s death, and her role as the “Witch’s Daughter.”

  • The Three Great Mabeasts: We learn about the White Whale (defeated in Season 1), the Great Rabbit, and the Black Serpent—all created by the Witch of Gluttony.

  • Beatrice’s 400-Year Wait: Her heartbreaking contract with Echidna kept her waiting for “that person” who never existed—until Subaru freed her.

  • Roswaal’s Obsession: Revealed as the original Roswaal living through soul transcription for 400 years, driven by his obsessive love for Echidna and following the Tome of Wisdom.

  • Found Family: Otto, Ram, Garfiel, Ryuzu, and even Puck all play crucial roles in helping Subaru achieve the “perfect” timeline.

Ending Explained

The season concludes with Subaru achieving what seemed impossible: saving both the Sanctuary and the mansion simultaneously. By forming genuine connections with Otto, Garfiel, Ram, and especially Beatrice, Subaru proves that he doesn’t need to shoulder everything alone. The Sanctuary’s barrier is broken, freeing the half-breeds trapped for generations. Beatrice is freed from her 400-year contract and becomes Subaru’s contracted spirit. Roswaal is bound by an oath curse preventing betrayal, though he remains dangerous with his plan to revive Echidna.

The key revelation is that Roswaal has been manipulating events for 400 years using his Tome of Wisdom, trying to create the perfect timeline where he can resurrect Echidna. Subaru’s “worthless” variable—Otto’s friendship and intervention—allowed him to break free from the tome’s predetermined path, proving that genuine human connection can overcome fate itself.

Emilia passes all three trials, confronting her past (the Elior Forest tragedy), alternate presents (what could have been), and potential futures (disasters yet to come). She learns the truth about Mother Fortuna, Petelgeuse before his corruption, and the mysterious Pandora—the Witch of Vanity—who seems to be the true mastermind behind many tragedies.

The final scene of Subaru and Emilia reaffirming their bond on the balcony represents hope after darkness—they’ve both grown tremendously, and together with their allies, they’re ready to face whatever comes next in the Royal Selection.

Predictions

  • Pandora’s Return: The Witch of Vanity remains a mystery with reality-warping powers. She’s likely the series’ true antagonist and will return to claim the seal.

  • Reviving the Frozen Elves: Emilia’s ultimate goal is saving her people frozen in Elior Forest, which will likely be a major arc.

  • Rem’s Awakening: Defeating the Archbishops of Gluttony is essential to restoring Rem’s existence and memories—this will be Subaru’s driving motivation.

  • Satella’s True Identity: Her connection to Emilia and her cryptic message to “kill her” suggests a deeper relationship that will be explored.

  • Roswaal’s Endgame: Despite the oath curse, Roswaal will continue pursuing Echidna’s resurrection, potentially putting him at odds with Subaru again.

  • Subaru’s Witch Factors: Possessing both Sloth (Invisible Providence) and now contracted with Beatrice, Subaru is accumulating power and witch connections that will matter later.

  • The Royal Selection Intensifies: With the Sanctuary crisis resolved, the competition between the five royal candidates will heat up dramatically.

Re:Zero Season 2 took everything we loved about Season 1 and dialed it up to eleven—more suffering, more complexity, more character development, and more philosophical depth. From Subaru’s breakdown in the Witch’s tea party to Emilia’s heartbreaking past, from Otto proving himself as best boy to Beatrice finally finding freedom after 400 years, this season delivered emotional gut-punches while expanding the lore exponentially.

The Sanctuary arc proves that Re:Zero isn’t just about watching Subaru die repeatedly—it’s about confronting trauma, accepting help, and finding meaning in suffering. Every character grew in meaningful ways, and the mysteries introduced (Pandora, the seal, Satella’s true nature) set up even more compelling storylines ahead.
